How to Choose Your CPA Discipline

All three lead to the same license — the choice is about fit
Whichever Discipline you pick, you end up with an identical CPA license. The real question is which one plays to your strengths and career direction, since Discipline sections are only offered in four testing windows a year and switching after registering means forfeiting that attempt.
BAR — Business Analysis and Reporting
An extension of FAR. If you enjoyed technical accounting (business combinations, leases, financial statement analysis) and are headed toward financial reporting, valuation, or advisory work, BAR is usually the natural fit.
ISC — Information Systems and Controls
Focused on information systems, data management, and IT audit/advisory including SOC engagements. A strong fit if you're interested in IT audit, risk and controls, or already work adjacent to technology risk.
TCP — Tax Compliance and Planning
An extension of REG, going deeper into tax planning for individuals and entities. The clear choice if your career is (or will be) tax-focused — public accounting tax practice, private client services, or in-house tax roles.
A simple heuristic
Ask which Core section you found most intuitive: if it was FAR, look at BAR; if REG, look at TCP. If neither stood out but you're drawn to systems/process/controls thinking, ISC is worth a closer look — many candidates find it has a gentler learning curve if they have some IT or process background already.
